Viking Age meets Modern Comfort

Aptly named, the Hotel Reykjavik Centrum,  is obviously right in the centre of Reykjavík and is built on some very old foundations. And we’re talking very very old, in fact, right on top of the ruins of the oldest settlement in the city - a Viking longhouse, dating from around 870. Interestingly enough, the ruins were only uncovered when the building of the hotel started, so the City of Reykjavík has now installed a fascinating exhibition underneath the hotel around the ruins, called The Settlement Exhibition 871+/-2.

The very high-tech exhibit will give you insight into Viking Age life, how people lived, how Reykjavik looked at the time and where Icelanders actually came from. Featuring lots of interactive screens, real-life ruins and sounds of bleating sheep and chirping Viking age birds, it will be a fascinating hour for all ages. We also particularly recommend the gift store which features really original gifts based on old Viking traditions but reworked in trendy ways, including spoons made from seashells, candles in the shape of gyrfalcons and cute t-shirts featuring Icelandic birds for tiny tots.

The charming hotel, which is built in the old turn-of-the-century style on top of a house from 1764, features 89 very modern and trendy rooms with all creature comforts such as a mini-bar, television, coffee-maker, iron, wi-fi and room service. Obviously Reykjavík Centrum is in the perfect location to profit from the variety of events, nightlife, restaurants and bars in the area and we recommend a walk through the old Grjótaþorp city area behind the hotel which is one of the oldest (and cutest) parts of the city. The hotel also boasts a classy restaurant, Fjalakötturinn, which perfects your stay with its array of traditional Icelandic dishes using only the finest Icelandic ingredients. Finish your evening with a visit to Uppsalir, a comfortable and elegant bar where you can relax with a coffee or after-diner drink after a busy day in the city .
