UFC star Conor McGregor sparked a social media frenzy tonight announcing his retirement on Twitter. McGregor, currently visiting Iceland, refused an Icelandic MMA reporter an interview earlier tonight.

Pétur Marinó Jónsson, writer at MMA Fréttir, asked McGregor for a word after training tonight. The answer was short but serious according to local news site Vísir:

“No, I'm retired. Fuck interviews.”

McGregor arrived in Iceland Monday with his crew and was training with fighting club Mjolnir today. Local fans have asked for a picture with the UFC star, like this young Icelander downtown Reykjavik Monday night.

His visit has gotten some attention although not as much as Kim Khardashian and Kanye West who are also visiting the island of 330 thousand people.

The 27 year old fighter wrote on Twitter: "I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya's later." A tweet which has gone viral.

The Irishman is due to fight Nate Diaz at UFC 200 on July 9 in Las Vegas. Diaz shocked the UFC world forcing McGregor into his first UFC defeat in March.

Diaz posted a tweet about an hour later than McGregor, saying:

"I guess my work here is done. I'm retiring too".

That was followed by a tweet by John Kavanagh, McGregor’s coach:

“Well was fun while it lasted”
